Scope in Scouts and Guides
Scouting is a voluntary, educational, non-political activity that is conducted on a national basis for the overall development of children and adults, that is, anyone from ages above 3 and beyond. It has different programmes for different age groups focusing on specific skill building and adventurous activity. In India, the Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) is the national Scouting and Guiding association of the country.
In this article, we will be looking at what scope being a scout or a guide provides us with in our professional and personal lives. The information shared in this article is based on the guidance provided in a live session titled “Scope of Scouts & Guides” conducted by the Shashi Dream Foundation with the guest speaker as Mr Dilip Patel.
EXPERT’S GUIDE:
Shri. Dilip Patel is the State Trainer of the OYMS (Online Youth Membership System) at Bharat Scouts and Guides in Chhattisgarh. He has more than 21 years of experience in scouting. He is the recipient of the ‘Governor Award’ two times in the year 2004 and 2013. He has received the most prestigious ‘Rashtrapati Award’ two times as well, in the years 2005 and 2015. He has organized more than 10 State/National/International camps. He is Rover Leader of CSAORC.

STRUCTURE OF THE BHARAT SCOUTS AND GUIDES
The association is divided into four main branches that cater to four different age groups:

The following are the highest level of awards given:
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
- Certificates of the level of Rashtrapati Award look good on resumes for jobs. These are awards that are awarded by the President of India.
- In State government, if one is the recipient of the Rajya Puruskar/ Rashtrapati Puruskar, they can get extra numbers added to their 10th and 12th board examination scores. These scores different from state to state: In Chattisgarh, it is 10 marks for those holding the Rajya Award and 15 marks for those holding the Rashtrapati Award.
- In many government institutions, like Railways, there are reservations of seats for Scouts/Guides in government jobs.
WHY SHOULD ONE BECOME A SCOUT/GUIDE?
- Such associations for Scouts and Guides trains children and adults to become leaders, be more open to taking opportunities, a good and responsible citizen and develop the person in all aspects such as physical, mental, psychological, societal, etc.
- It is a great way of making friends, especially for children. One gets to meet people for different backgrounds that are hardworking and ambitiously driven in different fields.
- Fun activities are conducted and awarded for. Awards are nationally recognised and nationally awarded as well.
- One also gets the opportunity to travel because of field projects.
- Certificates of different levels are helpful in different ways.
CONCLUSION
Being a scout or guide equips you with life skills that one may not be able to learn in school or daily life. Through their programmes, one gets to learn about leadership, discipline, teamwork, civil duties, public administration, physical and mental fitness and friendship. It is an experience that is one of a kind. And it is part of a global circuit of Scouts and Guides that exist all over the world, giving you an experience worth sharing and being proud of.
