How to take care of your Mental Health

Introduction of the Topic

When it comes to life, we want to live to the fullest. In doing so, it is important to maintain your health. Health does not only include your bodily health but it also includes your mental health. It is easy to know if anything is wrong in our body but the same is not true for our mind. Our mind is a part of our body therefore, its health is equally important.

We usually think that our mental health is fine. This is because we cannot see what’s wrong with our minds. The feelings of disappointment, losses, etc are the problems of our minds that affect our mental health. These problems go undetected because they are not visible to our eyes, unlike physical injuries.

It is important to identify these problems in order to live a peaceful life. There is a need for people to talk about mental health and spread awareness. The same message is given in the quote by Glenn Close, “What mental health needs are more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation”.

The speaker Ms. Gunjan Khorgade is a social worker. She holds the degree of MA (Social Work in Mental Health) from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. She completed her Post Graduation Diploma in Counseling Psychology from the Indian Institute of Counseling Psychology, Pune. She presented a Research paper on “Mental Health Treatment Seeking Behaviour of Tribals of Ghadchiroli District” at the 7th Annual Conference of AIAMSWF.

How to identify problems

In order to have peace of mind, it is important to –

  • Identify the problem (What you are feeling?)
  • Validate that feeling (Accept your feelings even the negative ones)
  • Express your emotions (Express through art, poetry, music, or do something that you like)

Meditation has been used as a key to look into our inner self. It helps to improve self-awareness and self-esteem, causes a low level of stress and anxiety, helps in better focus and concentration. Meditation has become popular in recent times mainly because people have started realizing its importance. Following is the list of meditation centers in India-

Counseling is a way by which people interact with the experts in the field, share their problems, and find a solution for the problems. There are many institutes that provide counseling to people who have troubles with their feelings. Some of the online counseling sites are-

These platforms can greatly benefit you in understanding your feelings and giving you the best way to deal with them.

Job Opportunities and Salary

With increased awareness about mental health especially in the metropolitans, a lot of jobs have come up as a counselor or psychologist. The average salary for a session of a psychiatrist ranges from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000. This session can be either a 45 minute or 60-minute session.

Conclusion

In this fast-paced life, we forget to take care of the most precious organ in the body that is, the brain. The reason for mental health issues is because we don’t face the problems of our minds. Once we face the issues of our mind head-on, we will be in peace and live our lives happily.
