Travel and tourism is a big industry worldwide. It contributes about more than 10 percent of global GDP. In a country as well, travel and tourism contribute greatly to the national GDP.
A job in travel and tourism deals with tour management, travel management and hospitality management. With India being known for having a variety of vibrant cultures, it attracts tourists like a magnet and thus the travel and tourism industry is growing rapidly. This has led to the foundation of various institutes that offer travel and tourism as a course. There are various internships as well as job opportunities in this sector. Therefore, if you have a knack for travelling or you enjoy mingling with people and managing travels this is a suitable career option for you.
In this article is listed everything you need to know to start a career in travel and tourism. The guidance provided in this article is based on a session conducted by the Shashi Dream Foundation under their initiative to provide career guidance to children in need. Shri. Atul Bhise is an Operations Executive at Holidayme. He has completed his graduation in Hotel and Tourism Management from G.H. Raisoni College of Hospitality Management and his MBA in tourism and travel service management from KUONI ACADEMY. Apart from this he has also passed IATA foundation course. Throughout his career he has worked with Holidayme, Rayna Tours & Travels, Travelocity Tours & Travels Tourist Link and SOTC Travel Ltd.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Given below are the basic eligibility criteria for courses in travel and tourism at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level. It may be noted that the eligibility criteria might also vary depending on the policies of the college/ university in which a candidate is applying.
Eligibility at undergraduate level:
- Should have completed their 10+2 from a recognized board in any stream, but preferably with Commerce subjects with a minimum aggregate score of 50%.
- SC/ST students have a relaxation of 5%.
3. Candidates must be between 17–25 years of age.
Eligibility at postgraduate level:
- Candidates should complete graduation from a recognized institute/ university with a minimum percentage (usually 50% — 60%).
- Preference for admission is usually given to candidates who have proficiency in any of the foreign languages.
- Entrance exam scores: CAT or MAT, or any other depending upon the college.
Eligibility of diploma course at undergraduate level:
- Candidates should clear Class XII from a recognised board with minimum 50% — 60% aggregate marks or on the basis of entrance exams, followed by group discussion and interview in some cases.
Eligibility Criteria for Certification Courses:
Candidates should clear Class XII from a recognised board with at least 45%— 50% marks.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Candidates looking to pursue a career in the tourism industry must have a love for travelling along with the hunger to learn new things. It requires awareness about the latest news as well as socio-economic trends of the world.
