Career in the Indian Navy
Introduction of the Career:
The Indian Navy is the naval division of the Indian Armed Forces. The Chief of Naval Staff commands the Indian Navy.
The Navy has the following three Commands, each under the control of a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief:-
The Western Naval Command (Headquarters at Mumbai).
The Eastern Naval Command (Headquarters at Visakhapatnam)
The Southern Naval Command (Headquarters at Kochi)
The Naval career is significant with limitless opportunities. In the Indian Navy, once you begin your career, there is only progress. The recruitment procedure provides two options: Joining as a Sailor or as an Officer. The system of the Indian Navy is just and fair, and one is rewarded duly based on their hard work and skills.
Introduction of the speaker:
To guide and advise on the career path in the Indian Navy, the expert for the session was Mr. KT Prakash. He is a Political science graduate from Bhopal University. He is a Veteran Chief Petty Officer and he has served in the Naval Aviation Branch for about 16 years. His work has pertained to Sea-Hawks and Sea Harriers. He then joined the Telecom Majors in their Projects Team. Currently, he is a Career Guidance Facilitator related to Military recruitment.

Eligibility Criteria:
For Officers:
- Permanent Commission through NDA/NA cadet entry and CDSE (Graduate) entry are through a written examination conducted by UPSC, followed by an interview by the Service Selection Board (SSB).
For Sailors:
- Qualified in 10+2 examination with 60% or more marks in aggregate with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects; Chemistry/Biology/Computer science from an Educational board recognized by Central/State Government.
The training after selection occurs at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.
The entire cost is covered by the Government of India. The trainees are not supposed to pay any amount.

Become an Officer of the Indian Navy:
Executive Officer:
General Service:
Qualification & Requirement: BE/B.Tech (Any discipline)
Work:
As an Executive Officer, you will be responsible to manage the ship and also use the ship as an instrument of tactical warfare.
You will need a good understanding of your ship’s capabilities and limitations and be able to turn them to your advantage when face-to-face with the enemy.
Your studies will include Anti-Submarine Warfare, Naval Communication, Gunnery, Navigation & Direction, Marine Commando, NBCD, Diving, Meteorology, and Oceanography.
Engineering:
General Service:
As an Engineer Officer, you will get an opportunity to operate and maintain the Marine Engineering equipment onboard ships/submarines/aircraft.
Qualification & Requirement: The candidates must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B Tech Degree from a recognized university in one of the following streams:- Marine, Mechanical, Aeronautical, or any other allied field
- Naval Architecture:
Qualification & Requirement: You must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B. Tech Degree from a recognized university in any one of the following stream:-
Mechanical
Mechanical Engineering with Automation
Civil
Aeronautical
Metallurgy
Naval Architecture
As an officer in the Naval Architect Cadre, your assigned duties would encompass a wide spectrum, including the design of warships and submarines, overseeing construction at various shipyards, and platform trials at sea.
Electrical Officer:
General Service:
Qualification & Requirement: You must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B Tech Degree from a recognized university in one of the following streams:-
Electrical
Electronics
TeleCommunication
Electronics & Instrumentation Engg
As an Electrical Officer, you will get an opportunity to operate and maintain the Marine Electrical equipment onboard ships/submarines/aircraft. Besides, huge opportunities exist to work in Repair Yards and Maintenance Units.
Become a Sailor of the Indian Navy:
- Artificer Apprentice
Work: As an Artificer, you will undergo the best technical training to hold very responsible positions as a sailor of the Indian Navy. work on steam-powered machinery, gas and diesel turbines, guided missiles, and other automatically controlled weapon, sensors avionic equipment
Qualification: You need 60% or more marks in aggregate with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects; Chemistry/Biology/Computer science in 10+2 from an educational board recognized by Central/State Government.
- SSR Senior Secondary Recruit
Work: You will serve in powerful, modern ships such as Aircraft Carriers, Guided Missile Destroyers and Frigates, Replenishment Ships, and highly technical and fascinating submarines and aircraft.
Qualification: Passed in 10+2 examination with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects; Chemistry/Biology/Computer science from an Educational board recognized by Central/State Government.
Matric Recruit
- Chef (MR)
You will be required to prepare food as per menu(vegetarian and non-vegetarian including handling of meat products), and need to take care of ration. Besides, you will also be trained in firearms and will be allotted other duties for the efficient running of the organization. - Steward (MR)
You would be required to serve food in the officer’s messes, as waiters, housekeeping, accounting of funds, wine and stores, preparation of the menu, etc. Besides, you will also be trained in firearms and will be allotted other duties for the efficient running of the organization. - Sanitary Hygienist (MR)
To maintain hygiene and cleanliness in wash-rooms and other areas. Besides, you will also be trained in firearms and will be allotted other duties for the efficient running of the organization.
Qualification: MR Entry (Chef, Steward, and Sanitary Hygienist) — Class X Pass from an educational board recognized by Central/State Government.
Conclusion
The Indian Navy has unlimited opportunities for young men and women to make a career. At the sea, your real skills and determination are put to test. Life, in general, is very challenging but is also satisfying. Your responsibilities will depend on your qualification and interests. The experience offered at the Navy is like none other. Your career will progress only upwards and you will be responsible for the safety of those around you as well as the entire nation. The time spent serving in the Indian Navy will be invaluable for your whole lifetime.
