Career in Psychology

The word “Psychology” is defined in Merriam-Webster as the science of mind and behaviour. It is a science which studies the mind of an individual by observing his/her behaviour, the way they talk, their expression can tell a lot about what is going on in their mind. Psychology deals with mind and its cognitive functions like learning, attention, concentration and memory. Psychology is a multifaceted discipline that includes areas such as human development, sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes.

Session Speaker:

The speaker Dr. Shaini Suraj is a Psychological Counsellor, Life Coach, Relationship Expert, Adolescent Coach and also a Regression Therapist. She is a professional member of the International Association of Applied Psychology, USA. She is also the member of Counsellor Council of India. She completed her education as an Ayurvedic Doctor and worked for a year before she joined a US-based company and started taking medical lectures for students. It was during this time that she realized that students face a lot of problems and fail to identify them. To understand more about the problems going on in their mind and to help them she did BA in Psychology. This was followed by MA in Psychology. She is currently working as Psychological Counselor at Meghe Group of Institutions. She is currently doing her Ph.D.

On 29th Sep, 2020 Shashi Dream Foundation was privileged to have Dr. Shaini Suraj as our guest speaker for a career counselling session on “Career in Psychology”. The counselling session was live-streamed on social media platforms where many viewers joined, asked their queries and learnt many new aspects of psychology.

Career in Psychology

Eligibility criteria:

For getting admission in BA in Psychology, one needs to opt for Humanities in 10 +2 as it offers psychology as a subject. If in case one didn’t opt for humanities, then also the field of psychology is open for you. Other than the BA program, there is another option of opting B.Sc in psychology. The B.Sc degree being from the science field gives more emphasis on practical learning, whereas BA degree gives emphasis on theoretical knowledge.

Eligibility for UG Psychology courses:

· Should have completed class 12th or equivalent education from recognized board.

· Candidates from all streams i.e. Arts, Science or Commerce are eligible.

· Candidates who have completed their class 12th from any open school board like NIOS are also eligible.

· Some Colleges/Institutes may mention additional eligibility criteria at the time of admission.

Eligibility for PG Psychology courses:

· Should have a bachelor degree with Psychology as a main subject.

· Those appearing for final year examination of their bachelor degree are also eligible

· Candidates who completed their graduation in psychology in distance education or from Open University are not eligible.

Job opportunities and salaries:

There are different branches of Psychology like clinical psychology, counseling psychology, health psychology, sports psychology, organizational psychology and forensic psychology. These all provide with different jobs for example, after completing forensic psychology, one can work with law enforcement and can help in determining motive of a crime or can help in narrowing the list of suspects. Sports Psychology for example, helps in improving the performance of an athlete.

In the beginning an independent counsellor can charge Rs.500 to Rs.1000 per session. With time there is increase in experience and also in the amount that you charge. If you enter a teaching profession, then the starting salary in colleges can start from Rs. 50,000 and with time can go up to Rs.1,00,000 per month. If you join a school or college as a counselor then the starting salary would range from Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000 per month.

After graduating and getting a degree in psychology, many start their own practice. Besides this, some join a school or college as a counsellor or go into the teaching profession or some work as a lecturer in colleges. There are many companies in India that hire depending on your specialization. You must have a specialization in Organizational Behaviour (OB) or Industrial Psychology as it is mostly called. Most of the companies hunt for skilled and experienced psychologists and for fresher’s it becomes tough to find a job. But if you are experienced enough or have an experience of at least 2 years your work is done.

Many good companies require Industrial Psychologists. They are:

· L&T

· TATA

· ABB

· WIPRO

· Welfare Organizations

· Hospitals

· NGOs

· Child/Youth Guidance Centers

· Research Establishments

Psychology as a science has helped in understanding the human mind and its impact on a person’s behaviour. It has helped in understanding problems which people face and enhanced our knowledge regarding how the mind can cause changes in personality. It is a dynamic field which provides ample opportunities for those who are thinking to make a career in Psychology.
