Career in Aviation as a Cabin Crew or Flight Attendant
Traveling on an airline is a luxury. It is very much important that the standard is maintained. The cabin crew of an airline not only serves to maintain a standard of hospitality but other than that, they are professionally trained in keeping the passengers safe, keeping the aircraft secure, and tending to in-flight medical emergencies such as heart attacks, asthma, emergency childbirth, fever, etc. On a flight, a variety of people travel with different tastes, preferences, and needs tending to all these kinds of people while you are 40,000 feet above the ground is not an easy task. It requires a certain kind of sophistication, eye to detail, and personality.
Other than that, outside of flights, the aviation industry is dependent upon a variety of professionals besides the cabin crew and the pilot. There are people responsible for the maintenance and functioning of the airport with departments for security, commercial personnel, operations, catering, etc. There are a lot of jobs to explore in the aviation industry. And the cabin crew is part of the in-flight department.
In this article, we will be looking at how can one make their career in aviation as a cabin crew or flight attendant. The guidance shared in this article is based on a live session conducted by the Shashi Dream Foundation on “Career in Aviation” with the speaker as Ms. Sarita Kumari.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ms. Sarita Kumari is presently a Grooming and Aviation Trainer at the Frankfinn Institute of Airhostess Training in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She has 11 years of experience as a Flight Attendant in Jet Airways India and Etihad Airways. She has done her bachelor's in Business and Commerce from Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College for Women in Dasuya, Punjab, and has done her Executive MBA in Human Resources and Personal Administration from Himalayan University.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The following are the eligibility criteria for individuals aiming for a career as a cabin crew.
· Be of 18 years and above of age
· Minimum education qualification should be 10 + 2 from a recognized education board, with aggregate scores of 60 percent or above
· There are also some aviation companies that count graduation as a minimum qualification.
· No negative police record.
· Medically fit
· Good English speaking
· Other than this, there are also physical criteria that are considered.
- Skin should be clear, even-toned and healthy-looking
- Minimum height for women is 160 centimeters and for men, it is above 165 centimeters.
- Weight requirements include BMI (body mass index) which women should be between 18 to 22 and men should be between 20 to 24.

SELECTION PROCESS
There are a variety of airlines in India. Applying for a job as a cabin crew is requires two steps. First, one needs to go to the website of the airline and look for the option of ‘Career’. Or you can also directly search the airline’s name with the word ‘career’ next to it and you will be directed to their applications page. On this page, one can find the airline’s personal criteria and selection process.
The selection includes applying on the website and uploading a CV attached with it. Then upon shortlisting, people are called for interviews.
Preparing for the Interview:
- Appearance is important: hair should be appropriately gelled or groomed, clothing should be appropriate, makeup should be appropriate as well men should be clean shaved, etc.
- Impactful, well-practiced introduction
- Resume or CV as well as a cover letter
- Should be aware of the company you are applying to
- General knowledge also tested
- Make sure there are no lies on the resume as interviewers might question you
TRAINING INSTITUTES
There are no specific colleges with specific degrees for becoming a flight attendant but there are academies or institutes that provide specific certificate courses or diplomas that focus on grooming, personality, and confidence-building, and interviewing.
The objective of raining institutes is to get you ready to give interviews for airlines. There is no guarantee that you will get a job at a training institute.
Each airline, after you have been selected through the interview, trains you to become a cabin crew. Training institutes are in no way compulsory, they just help you cultivate a personality fit for giving interviews for airlines. The following are some training institutes:
JOBS AND SALARY
The average salary for flight attendants — air stewardesses or air stewards — in India is 5.7 lakhs per annum and could increase up to 10 lakhs per annum or more, with more experience or a better airline.
Other than flight attendants who are part of the in-flight department along with the pilot, there are a variety of departments responsible for on-ground level duties.
Ground staff includes all the employees and job profiles that are not responsible for being in the flight and rather than help in the functioning of an airport. The following are jobs besides the cabin crew or the in-flight department:

A career as a flight attendant or cabin crew might seem easy to people but it is a job that demands a lot of perfection, sophistication, and composure. It is a job that requires a lot of patience. Communication is essential in this job and there is a lot of traveling. If that is what you are looking for in a career, then this is a great career for you. Since this job demands a lot of perfection, it may be really hard to get selected, or that you may face a lot of rejections but it is all about not giving up.
