Career as a Nurse
Nursing is a great career from practitioner to doctoral-level researcher. Nurses are hand to health care professionals who provide focused and highly personalized care.
As an educator, nurses help whole communities by reaching individuals and group how to take steps to improve or maintain their health.
Although an entry-level nurse can find a job with three years Registered Nurse (RN) degree, there is a growing national movement to require all nurses to hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. One can also find more options for RN to Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and MSN to doctoral programs, designed to meet the increasing demand for more highly skilled nurses in the workforce.
Expert’s Guide:
Shashi dream Foundation was privileged to have Mrs. Rajinder Pal Kaur as the guest speaker of the 66th session on 28 August 2020, the session was held online and many watched the session on “Career as a Nurse”. Mrs.Rajinder Pal Kaur is a retired assistant nursing superintendent at PGIMER, Chandigarh. She has done general nursing and midwifery from Francis Newton mission Hospital, Firozpur ( Punjab). She has 33 Years of experience in nursing from (1986–2019) in PGIMER, Chandigarh.
She started the session with her journey and continued by sharing her experiences of how she helped people, got admiration and respect. Later she talked about different types of nursing, various medical workers that work for the community. She explained about the different jobs a nurse is responsible for.
Later, she talked about the different skills that nurses should incur which included confidence, and time management as a core. She discussed the fields one can choose after doing a Master’s, Diploma, and added by saying that there are many government jobs. One can take these jobs by giving entrance exams. She also talked about the opportunities that are available internationally. She also shared the experiences she deals with during emergencies. When asked about the fear behind the jobs performed by nurses during the pandemic: Covid-19, she answered that no one should be afraid of it, “ Even I have worked during Swine Flu and I am completely fine”, she said.
Adding on to the career opportunities for nursing, she informed about the differences between private and government hospitals, top universities in India that one can go for.
It was an interactive session and she answered everybody’s queries patiently.
In the end, she said, “one should have all the skills and will to become a nurse” that’s enough for a good career in the same.

As we are seen nursing is not only taking care of the sick but also other opportunities for qualified nurses including teaching, Administration, and Research jobs and remarkable aspect of this profession is that a vast majority of nurses are women however, of late, men are also showing interest in the same.
With the rapid growth in the population coupled with the requirement for better health care facilities, there is an unending need for nurses in the country however the supply of nurses is falling short with respect to demand. So, individuals inculcating the qualities of the same have great career prospects.
